MD: How to Make Healthy Living Really Simple | Dr. Vimal George | TEDxNorthwesternU
“The traditional advice… about following a healthy diet and exercising regularly has failed.”
In spite of tremendous advances as a society, shockingly over 95% of us fail to meet basic standards of healthy living. Far from making us healthier, modernity has led to a higher burden of chronic diseases that used to be rare. Defying conventional thinking, Dr. V. Thomas George argues that mindless consumerism is the hidden underlying diagnosis for our increasingly prevalent physical and mental health problems.
Drawing upon research and ideas from fields ranging from personal finance to economics, psychology and medicine, Dr. George presents a simple prescription that is nothing short of transformational for the individual and a prescription for a paradigm shift for much that afflicts our modern society. In essence, by consuming mindfully based on the science of happiness, we are likely to live happier, healthier and wealthier lives. Dr. V. Thomas George practices medicine as a family doctor in Austin, Texas where he lives with his wife and two children. With a medical degree, a master’s degree in healthcare quality and safety management, and experience as chief of quality of his clinic, he has a unique and broad understanding of population health. Alongside his clinical practice, he mentors medical students and healthcare professionals. Dr. George is also the author of an award-winning book, “Health in Flames: A Doctor’s Prescription for Living BEYOND Diet and Exercise”. He has been featured on several podcasts and is also an active blogger and recently started a YouTube channel. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
